The Basics

What Is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage (also called Medicare Part C) is a way to get your Medicare benefits through a private insurance company that contracts with Medicare, instead of through Original Medicare directly. Many plans bundle additional benefits beyond what Original Medicare covers.

💼

All-in-One Coverage

Medicare Advantage plans typically combine Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage, and many include Part D prescription drug coverage.

Extra Benefits, Often Included

Depending on the plan and area, some Medicare Advantage plans offer extras like dental, vision, hearing, or fitness benefits not covered by Original Medicare.

🕑

Out-of-Pocket Maximum

Unlike Original Medicare alone, Medicare Advantage plans include an annual limit on what you pay out of pocket for covered services.

Who Can Enroll

Medicare Advantage Eligibility

In general, you may be eligible to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan if:

  • You are enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B
  • You live in the service area of a plan offered where you reside
  • You do not have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), with certain exceptions that vary by plan and state

Most people become eligible for Medicare at age 65. Some people under 65 qualify earlier due to certain disabilities. Specific eligibility rules, available plans, and benefits vary by location and change from year to year — a licensed agent can confirm what applies to your specific situation.

Timing

When You Can Enroll

Medicare Advantage enrollment is generally limited to specific windows during the year.

Initial Enrollment Period

A 7-month window around when you first become eligible for Medicare, typically centered on your 65th birthday.

Annual Enrollment Period

Each year from October 15 through December 7, anyone with Medicare can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage plan for the following year.

Special Enrollment Periods

Certain life events — such as moving or losing other coverage — may qualify you to make changes outside the usual windows.
